All meaning is derived from uniquenesses or extreme low frequencies.

Working towards a goal creates meaning by artificially decreasing the number of times one can reach that goal in a single lifespan. Taking shortcuts on the other hand diminishes meaning by vastly increasing the frequency of gratification events.

In the short run, technology decreases the frequency-based meaning-effect of work by increasing both productivity and lifespan. In the long run, it renders all work obsolete.

One can switch from a goal-oriented framework to a process-oriented one and drop the frequentist approach to meaning-generation altogether. But this switch is quiet unnatural and requires a heavy retraining of the mind.

An easier alternative is to drop work as a source of meaning altogether and focus on relationships with friends and family which will retain their uniqueness forever.

Technological progress takes place at a much faster pace than biological evolution does. As a rule of thumb, one should always ride the slower waves whenever the primary concern is meaningfulness.

obsession with number two

I am obsessed with number two. I do not remember clearly when this obsession started, but it has certainly gotten worse over the last two years.

Although it can cause considerable stress in certain situations, it can be quiet beneficial as well:

  • By forcing me to trim things down to two, it puts me on a healthy information diet.

  • By forcing me to pair individual things into sets of two, it helps me uncover analogies and dualities that I would have otherwise missed.

mystery of two and three

Number one symbolises uniqueness. It is prevalent in both mathematics and physics. Beyond number one, mathematics and physics diverge in a mysterious way.

In mathematics, if you have three examples of a given structure, then it is extremely likely that there are infinitely many other examples as well. In other words, beyond uniqueness, the only finite number mathematics favours is the number two.*

In physics, number three plays the same role that number two plays in mathematics.** It underlies all plural ontologies.

  • There are three spatial dimensions.

  • There are three gauge theories corresponding to the three fundamental forces.

  • There are three generations of leptons and quarks.

  • Only the first three fundamental representations of the double cover of the Poincare group matter for calculating the spins of fundamental particles.

  • Only the first three orders of the generic Lagrangian matter for describing the dynamics of non-interacting particles.

facebook as a cultural hype

There are hypes of different periodicities. Cultural shifts are among the slowest. (Quantitative traders are well aware of the fractal nature of cycles.)

Mark Zuckerberg is a serious man. He does not like hype. He prefers utility over coolness.

General opinion is that Facebook owns "the social layer" and Mark is connecting the world. But this is complete bullshit for anyone who knows a little bit of sociology.

Facebook does not own the social layer. It is the social layer who owns Facebook.

Mark may detest coolness, but the early adopters of social platforms are always among the youngsters and the youngsters care a lot about coolness. In fact, Facebook owes its wildfire growth among university campuses to its cool beginnings.

Now the youngsters have shifted to other platforms and Mark is going crazy realising that he will not be able to buy all these platforms off. (Public markets serve an enormously important social role: For a company like Snapchat, going public is the only option for realising value for its investors without submitting itself to a greater behemoth.)

Youngsters disrupt the status quo set by their elders.  (It is their sociological role to do so.) They are catalysers of change. They challenge for the sake of challenging. They test which social structures deserve to survive by shaking them to their cores.

And make no mistake, Facebook will crumble too.

Mark is not connecting the world. It is the opposite. Mark is disconnecting the world by virtualising the already-existing real friendships. 

The very word "friend" has lost its meaning. We have become estranged from each other, turning into wanna-be celebrities broadcasting to our own friends and anxiously building fake images. We are now meeting up less often in the real world because we are meeting up more often in the virtual world.

Mark is riding a massive cultural wave and creating a positive feedback loop that is accelerating the death of this very wave. The hegemony of self-exhibitionist narcissistic openness will soon come to a halt. (Early adopters have already fled this trend.) The pendulum has shifted too much in the direction of openness and atomistic individualism. Now, along with the massive conservativeness wave in politics, it will shift back to reservedness and community-oriented holism.

True. The most tangible network is our friendship network. But that should not make you think that Facebook is built on better foundations than something like Twitter which is built on interest-based networks. In fact, the opposite is true: It is platforms like Twitter which serve a real need rather than Facebook.

Interest-based communities existed before Facebook and will continue to exist after Facebook. The true strength of the internet has lied in its ability bring out the long tail in everything. Thanks to the internet, a substantial number of people can gather around a very niche topic and buy stuff related to a very niche interest, stuff which would have never made it to the physical shelves due to the diffuse geographic distribution of the demand.

Soon people will realise that the only real value offered by Facebook lies in its ability to connect us to our long-lost friends, and Facebook will be used primarily as a catalogue of expired friendships and our long-lost friends will upgrade from a mass grave to a proper cemetery.

So Mark, why so serious? 

test of time

I just went through more than a hundred papers that I saved to read later almost 8 years ago. Now 90 percent of them looks not worth reading at all.

Standing the test of time is a very efficient filter. You do not have to exert any effort at all. Just put the issue on hold for some time and it resolves itself.

Isn't that just magical?

Now that I got into the mood, I decided to go through my actual physical library as well. Half an hour later I discarded around 40 books while repeatedly whispering myself "Why did I even read this shit?"

Letting the society figure out the best out there is also a very powerful tool. Although the societal filter may not exactly match your tastes and interests, due to its greater longevity, it is much more efficient than yours.

How many 1000 years-old books do we still find worth reading today? 10? 20? I have no idea but it is a very small number compared to the actual number of books written.

Today, around 2-3 million books are published worldwide every year. 99.99 percent of them is crap and contains absolutely no universal truths about the human kind or the physical universe. Slowly or not, they will all die off. (Even scientific facts have an average life-time of 45 years.)

yemeksepeti'ni neden sildim

Yaklaşık bir hafta önce Yemeksepeti uygulamasını telefonumdan sildim. Bu tarz inovasyonların topluma faydadan çok zarar getirdiğini düşünüyorum:

- Kalori almak için bile kalori harcamayan, sürekli göt büyüten bir nesle döndük. (Herşey ayağımıza gelsin, götümüzü kaldırmayalım diye girişimcilerimiz kafa patlatıyor. Tabi mentörlerimiz ve yatırımcılarımız da gazı veriyor.)

- Sağlıksız yemekler bir dokunuş uzağımızda olunca daha fazla tüketiyoruz. (Hayatımda yemediğim kadar hamburger yedirdin bana Yemeksepeti. Tebrik ederim gerçekten!)

- Sokaklarımıza renk katan, yanı başımızdaki esnaf kan ağlarken, yaşadığımız dokudan kopuk, uzak yerlerden siparişler veriyoruz. (Sürekli pide siparişi verdiğim adamlar meğersem abudik gubudik bir lokasyonda bodrum katından çalışıyormuş. Geçen araba kullanırken şans eseri tabelalarını gördüm.)

- Sokaklarımız sürekli ters yönde giden ve kaldırıma çıkan, devamlı trafik kurallarını ihlal eden ve korna çalan gürültülü motorsikletlilerle doldu. (Geçen hafta bu kuryeci arkadaşlardan biri az kalsın bir buçuk yaşındaki kızımızı eziyordu. Acil bir yerlere hamburger yetiştireceğim diye, çalıştığı restoranın Yemeksepeti'ndeki hız kategorisi puanı düşmesin diye hayatımızı karartacaktı.)

Yukarıda sıraladığım maddelerin sebep olduğu toplumsal zarar eminim Yemeksepeti'nin yarattığı ekonomik değerden çok daha fazladır. (Zaten yaratılan ekonomik değerin büyük bir kısmı restoranların kar marjından, monopolistik güç kullanılarak oyuluyor. Yani gerçek bir katma değer değil.)

Artık hayat kalitesini parayla eş tutan bir gerizekalılık seviyesine düştüğümüz için bu tarz hesap kitaplara kimse girmiyor. (Yaratılan zarara parasal bir değer konamıyor mu? O zaman siktir et, kardayız.)

Yemeksepeti ders kitaplarına girmeli, "digitally native" çocuklarımız için çok güzel bir case study olur. Verilmesi gereken minimum dersler şunlar:

- Ortak varlıkların trajedisine yenik düşmeyin. Kendi hayatınızı biraz iyileştireceksiniz diye başkalarının hayatını bok etmeyin. Onlar benzer kararlar alınca sizin hayatınız da bok olacaktır.

- Teknoloji çözüm ürettiği kadar sorun da üretir.

- Her şey parayla ölçülemez. Değer, paradan çok daha üst bir kavramdır. 

- Kendi hayatınızı kendiniz dizayn etmezseniz, başkaları sizin için dizayn eder. Kontrolü hiç bir zaman kaybetmeyin. Arada bir kullandığınız servislerin, sahip olduğunuz şeylerin gerçekten gerekli olup olmadığını sorgulayın.

optimize mallık

Sanırım insanoğlu bundan sonraki her bir inovasyon dalgasında televizyonu tekrar keşfedecek. Facebook en zeki insanları bünyesine kattı, onlara dünyanın kaynağını ayırdı, optimizasyonun dibine vurdu, sonunda dönüşe dönüşe televizyona dönüştü.

Bu gelişmeye pek de şaşırmamak gerek. Televizyon zaten olgun bir teknolojiydi ve uzun yıllar boyu Facebook'un dikkat ettiği parametrelere benzer parametrelere göre optimize edilmişti.

Dizayn yaparken ahlak nedir unutuyoruz. Millet mala bağlıyor biz seviniyoruz.

"İyi de ne yapalım, insanlar bunu istiyor!"

İyi de insanlar kumar da oynamak istiyor. Herhalde kapitalizmi tamamen kendi haline bıraksak hepimiz şeker hastası, cahil, şişko kumarbazlara dönüşürdük.

İnsan yetiştirmek ister istemez biraz despotluk içerir, çünkü bugün için değil gelecek için optimizasyon yapmanızı gerektirir.

Doğru. Başkası adına kararlar almak, gelecek için optimizasyon yapmak ahlaki açıdan problemlidir. Fakat en azından başarılı olma şansı vardır. Bugün için optimizasyon yaparsanız, insanların içindeki hayvanı dışarı çıkarmaktan başka bir yere varamayacağınız kesindir.

regülasyon, inovasyon, saçmalasyon

Devletler toplumsal önemi olan sektörlerin hepsini ağır regulasyona tabi tutuyorlar. Amaç bizi korumak tabi, fakat sonuç tam bir saçmalasyon.

Eğitim, sağlık, finans, sigorta... Bu sektörlerin hepsi taş çağında yaşıyor. Her hafta en az bir tanesi beni kısa devreye sokuyor. Allah kimseyi banka müşteri temsilcisiyle muhattap olmak zorunda bırakmasın, devlet hastanesine düşürmesin... Ne zaman eğitim sistemiyle ilgili bir gelişme duysam, çocukların hepsinden geçmiş tüm jenerasyonlar adına özür dileyesim geliyor.

"Sen de gereksiz yere şikayet etmeden duramıyorsun... Görmüyor musun her yerimiz start-up oldu ayol, kollektiflere teknokentlere sığamıyoruz!"

Her yerimiz start-up oldu da hayat kalitemiz mi arttı allah aşkına? Eskiden en azından cahildim, bir şeylerin inovasyonla değişebileceğini, her tür sürecin kullanıcı deneyimi açısından mükemmelleştirilebileceğini bilmiyordum. Şu an bildiğiniz işkence çekiyorum. 

"Ama öyle deme ya... Ne güzel kedi, bebe fotoları paylaşabiliyoruz. T-shirt, ayakkabı, diş macunu, hamburger desen hop kapımızda."

Allah belamızı versin gerçekten.

uluslararası sidik yarışları

Birleşik Arap Emirlikleri yüz yıl içerisinde Mars'ta ilk şehri kurmayı hedefliyormuş. Konuyla ilgili araştırmalar için deli gibi para akıtacaklarmış.

Dünyanın en yaşanılmaz yerlerinde, dünyanın en yüksek kulelerini diken, devasa yapay adalar yapan, saçma sapan şehirler kuran BAE, eminim Mars gibi yaşanmaz bir yerde de parayı basarak iyi bir iş çıkaracaktır. 

Adamlardaki sidik yarışı hassasiyetine bakar mısınız? Amerika'dan Elon Musk "Biz Mars'a gidiyoruz kardeşim." dediğinden beri tüm ezik ülkeler ardı ardına "Biz daha önce gideceğiz." gibi demeçler vermeye başladı. Yahu Mars yıllardır orada duruyor, Musk konuşana kadar neredeydiniz?

Ayrıca neden bilimsel araştırmalara kayıtsız şartsız para yağdıramıyorsunuz? İllahi bir dünya savaşı, soğuk savaş veya kolonizasyon furyası mı gerekiyor? İllahi bir dominasyon hikayesi mi gerekiyor?

Dünyanın en ulvi işlerine dünyanın en sikimsonik sebeplerinden dolayı para akıtılıyor olması midemi bulandırıyor gerçekten. Adamlar "en yüksek kule bizde" diyebilmek için inşaat teknolojilerine çığır atlattırdılar ya... Küçük penis sendromu başka bir şey değil.

Bilime destek mi olmak istiyorsunuz? Musk gibi yeni bir uluslararası sidik yarışı çıkartın. Diğer bütün fon toplama çabalarınız, bu tarz bir yarışın yaratacağı etkinin yanında devede kulak kalacaktır.

an information consumption guide

The amount of information created daily is huge. You need to set up some proper filters to preserve your sanity. Here is my personal advice:

- For your deep readings, follow a professional human curator who has similar interests as you do. (You need someone whose actual job is curation. Pay if necessary.) Algorithmic machine curators are horrible at spotting high-quality articles, because they use inputs generated by the general public and the general public has absolutely no taste or depth.

- For your news reading, follow an algorithmic curator. Machines are much better at quickly scanning large databases and bringing together a comprehensive and timely feed. You will not experience much downside neither since the importance of a piece of news is highly correlated with its popularity.

Note that, in both cases, other human readers are utilised to do the most mechanical part of the job for you. This means that if these advices are followed by everyone, then they will no longer work. Machine curators will have no signals to work with and human curators will wait for others to curate.
